Metal detectors in Sri Lanka: types, prices and where to buy
A metal detector is an electronic instrument that uses electromagnetic fields to find hidden metal in people, bags, food, products and materials. PBS supplies industrial and security metal detectors in Sri Lanka.
Metal detectors in Sri Lanka at a glance
Metal detectors supplied in Sri Lanka for business fall into two main categories: security detectors (handheld wands and walk-through gates) and industrial detectors (conveyor, pipeline and free-fall systems, and X-ray inspection for food, pharmaceutical and garment lines). PBS Metal Detectors in Colombo supplies both, with a one-year warranty on handheld units and operator training for security guards.

How a metal detector works
Every metal detector works on the same principle. A coil sends out a magnetic field. When a piece of metal enters that field, it disturbs it. A second coil senses the disturbance, and the detector raises an alarm or rejects the product.
The difference between detectors is where they are used and what they are tuned to find: a weapon on a person, or a fragment of metal the size of a grain in a food product.
In three steps
A transmitter coil creates an alternating magnetic field.
Metal passing through creates a small field of its own, called an eddy current.
A receiver coil senses the change, and the detector alarms or rejects the product.
Types of metal detector
Which type you need depends on what you are protecting: people and places, or products on a production line.
PBS is an authorized Techik distributor and service center for Sri Lanka, so industrial detectors come with local installation and support.
PBS metal detectors
Gates for people at entrances, events, factories and offices.
Wands for checking people and bags, from LKR 14,000.
Inspect packed and unpacked products moving on a belt.
For liquids, sauces and pastes pumped through pipes.
For powders, grains and granules falling through a chute.
For tablets and capsules in pharmaceutical production.
Reject metal and wrong-weight packs in one machine.
For bags and parcels at entrances.
Finds glass, stone and bone as well as metal.
Where metal detectors are used in Sri Lanka
Factories use them to keep metal out of food, medicine and clothing. Security teams use them to keep weapons out of buildings and events.
PBS supplies industrial and security metal detectors only. We do not sell hobby detectors for treasure hunting.
Typical users
Tea, spices, coconut, bakery, meat and seafood.
Tablets, capsules and powders.
Broken needles in finished clothing.
Hotels, offices, banks, schools, events and public buildings.
How to choose a metal detector
Start with five questions, then send them to us and we will recommend a model and quote within 24 hours.
Five questions
People and bags, or a product such as food, tablets or garments.
This sets the sensitivity you need.
Wet, salty or hot products affect detection.
Sets the size and type of detector.

Metal detectors: common questions
What is a metal detector?
A metal detector is an electronic instrument that uses electromagnetic fields to find metal objects hidden in people, bags, food, products or materials. It alarms when metal disturbs its magnetic field.
How does a metal detector work?
A transmitter coil creates an alternating magnetic field. When metal passes through it, the metal disturbs the field, and a receiver coil picks up the change and triggers an alarm or rejects the product.
What types of metal detector are used in Sri Lanka?
Security teams use walk-through gates and handheld wands. Factories use conveyor, pipeline and free-fall metal detectors on production lines for food, pharmaceuticals and garments. PBS supplies all of these.
What is the difference between a security and an industrial metal detector?
A security detector finds weapons or prohibited metal on people and bags. An industrial detector finds small metal contamination in products on a production line, and usually rejects the contaminated pack automatically.
Can a metal detector find all metals?
Detection depends on the metal type, the size of the piece and the product being inspected. Ferrous metal is easiest to find, and stainless steel is harder, especially in wet or salty food. A supplier should test your actual product.
Does PBS sell metal detectors for treasure hunting?
No. PBS supplies industrial and security metal detectors for factories, institutions and security teams, not hobby detectors.
How much does a metal detector cost in Sri Lanka?
Prices depend on the type. Handheld security detectors start from LKR 14,000 per unit excluding VAT, and industrial systems cost more depending on size and sensitivity. See the price guide for every product.
