Choosing between a gate, a wand and a scanner

Most sites need a combination rather than one machine. The question is what each entrance has to stop, and how many people or bags pass through it.

  • Walk-through metal detector. Screens every person, hands free, keeps a queue moving. The right choice for a main entrance, a factory gate, a hotel lobby, a school or an event.
  • Handheld metal detector. For the secondary check on anyone the gate alarms, and for low-traffic or temporary points where a gate is not justified. Every gate should have at least one wand beside it.
  • X-ray baggage scanner. For what people are carrying rather than what they are wearing. Needed wherever bags, parcels or deliveries enter.
  • Mail and parcel scanner. A smaller tunnel for a mail room, where the risk is in letters and small packages rather than luggage.
  • Liquid explosive detector. Checks sealed bottles without opening them, at entrances where drinks and containers are carried in.
  • Shoe scanner and body scanner. Where footwear or non-metallic items have to be checked without asking people to undress or remove shoes.
A practical rule. One gate plus two wands plus a divest tray will outperform a single very expensive gate at almost every entrance, because the queue keeps moving and the guard can resolve alarms properly.

Installing and running the equipment

  1. Site the gate properly. Keep it clear of lift doors, shutters, large moving metal and other gates. Two gates close together interfere unless they are synchronised.
  2. Plan the queue. A divest tray before the gate and a clear space after it do more for throughput than any setting.
  3. Set sensitivity to the threat, not to the maximum. A gate that alarms on every belt buckle gets ignored within a week, which is worse than no gate.
  4. Keep the X-ray curtains intact. They are part of the shielding. Replace damaged strips rather than removing them.
  5. Train the operators. Image interpretation on an X-ray scanner matters far more than the machine. We train your staff at handover.
  6. Test and log. Run a daily test with a known test object on each gate and scanner and keep the record.
  7. Confirm what regulation applies. X-ray equipment is subject to Sri Lanka radiation safety regulations. Tell us the site and use, and we confirm what registration or approval you need before you order.

What to send us for an exact quote

  1. What the entrance is: factory gate, office lobby, hotel, school, event, embassy or government building.
  2. How many people and bags pass through in the busiest hour.
  3. Whether the point is indoors, covered or fully open, and whether mains power is available there.
  4. The door or passage width, and for a scanner, the largest bag or parcel that must fit.
  5. Whether you need it permanent or portable.
  6. Whether any standard or authority has specified a requirement to you in writing.

Common questions about security screening

Walk-through gate or handheld detector?

A walk-through gate screens everyone passing through, hands free, and keeps a queue moving. A handheld wand is for a second check on whoever the gate alarms, and for places with too little traffic or space to justify a gate. Most sites end up with both: one gate on the main entrance and a wand per guard.

How many people can a walk-through gate handle?

The gate itself is not usually the limit. Throughput depends on how you pace people and whether they divest keys, phones and belts first. A single gate with a divest tray and one guard typically handles a steady flow comfortably; adding a second lane helps far more than raising the sensitivity.

Will the gate alarm on phones, keys and belt buckles?

It will at high sensitivity. Multi-zone gates let you set different sensitivity per zone, so you can stay alert to items at waist and ankle height without alarming on a belt buckle. The practical fix is a divest tray before the gate plus a sensitivity programme matched to what you actually need to stop.

Is an X-ray baggage scanner safe for the operator?

These are shielded cabinet systems designed so that radiation outside the housing stays at background levels in normal use. Ask for the radiation leakage figure in the datasheet and keep it with your records. The lead curtains at each end of the tunnel are part of the shielding, so damaged curtains must be replaced, not removed.

Does X-ray damage items in the bag?

Clothing, electronics, documents and food are unaffected at the dose used for baggage screening. Unprocessed photographic film is the usual exception, so hand-check it rather than passing it through.

Is X-ray screening equipment regulated in Sri Lanka?

X-ray equipment is subject to Sri Lanka's radiation safety regulations. Tell us where the machine will be installed and what it will be used for, and we will confirm what registration or approval applies before you order, so it is not discovered after delivery.

Can screening equipment be used outdoors or at events?

Walk-through gates are available in portable and battery-backed versions for events and temporary gates, but they need shelter from rain and a stable surface. Handheld detectors are fully portable. Tell us whether the location is covered and whether mains power is available at the point of use.

What does security screening equipment cost?

Walk-through metal detectors run from about LKR 500,000 to 3,000,000, handheld detectors from LKR 14,000 to 350,000, and X-ray baggage scanners from LKR 3,500,000 to 35,000,000. Shoe scanners, mail and parcel scanners, liquid explosive detectors and body scanners are quoted on request. All excluding VAT.
